Early in the school year 2018- 2019 several initiatives that are aligned to the Chancellor and District mission were introduced at PS173. In the past, the school mission focuses on challenging our children mainly in academics and we have seen the wonderful and exciting results our children have achieved. We are proud that we have produced avid readers, thoughtful writers and magical mathematicians year after year.
Times have changed, and we will continue to support our students beyond literacy, math and science. In the classroom. We have to be cognition of who the individual is behind the reading, writing and math, and what s/he will do with all that knowledge acquired. It is important that our students know what kindness, tolerance, resiliency and empathy is. Where will their knowledge take them if they don’t have these qualities of a good citizen; our children will merely be just another reader, writer and mathematician.
Enter our new mascot, the Chameleon, representing our school culture of resiliency, tolerance and adaptability. To cultivate these qualities in all adults and students in our school, we imbed social emotional learning into our curriculum; students and adults are practicing compassion, resiliency and self-awareness through understanding and using classroom charter, mood meter and the R.U.L.E.R. program. Workshops with and for parents on these programs will be scheduled, and I hope you will be part of this new phase of learning. Besides the social-emotional learning, there are other programs that are bubbling inside 173, such as the Computer Science for All where every student will have experienced by 2026, a goal of our Mayor. The science program “AMPLIFY” will take our students into a whole new world of S.T.E.A.M learning while addressing the Next Generation Standards. Thanks to the PE Works Program, we have a second Physical education teacher who is also a certified trainer of “Beautiful Me”, a component of the social-emotional learning initiative.
As new concepts, policies and practices are introduced towards furthering our student learning, I will post all updates here. Have a fantastic holiday. Be well. Be safe.
