Principal Tweedy

Dear P.S. 173 Chameleons,

I hope this message finds you refreshed and ready for the 2023-2024 school year!  As the Principal of P.S. 173 Fresh Meadows, I look forward to welcoming all students back for another fantastic school year! Our dedicated staff is excited to provide an array of engaging and challenging learning experiences for all students. 

This year we are excited to engage students in a brand new Literacy Curriculum, HMH Into Reading and Writing along with Fundations in grades Kindergarten through third to build foundational reading skills as part of the NYC Reads Initiative!  Our approach to literacy will be aligned with the science of reading (a collection of research that explains how the brain learns to read and write). It is our goal to ensure that EVERY student achieves success in literacy this year…we just know that we will CRUSH our literacy goals! 

In Mathematics we will expand on the Envisions curriculum to incorporate more opportunities for students to TALK about math through Number Talk Routines. These routines seek to celebrate different ways of approaching mathematical problems while engaging students in deep student-led conversations. 

We will also continue to #SetGoalsandCRUSHthem this school year by engaging in Data Chats after every screener window so that students can fully understand and embrace where they are and where they want to go academically!

I’m looking forward to sharing more about these and other PS 173 initiatives over the course of  the year during monthly morning meeting with me, entitled What’s Brewing with Mrs. Tweedy - topics for these meetings will include NYC Reads, our positive behavior system, the Chameleon Code, Data Chats, Math Talk Routines, Individualized Education Plans, Strategies for Mulit-Lingual Learners and Station Teaching and will include classroom visits! Dates to be announced soon!

This year is also our 75th Anniversary Year!  We can’t wait to share the many exciting celebrations we have planned!  Stay tuned for more information.
