Computer Science

Computer Science

“Computer Science" or “CS”, is all about solving problems using the power of computers. Computers help us complete astonishing tasks including connecting people globally, organizing the world’s collective knowledge, and advancing new means of transportation. However, computers still depend on us. In fact, when programming computers, we have to give them very specific sets of instructions because they do only what they are programmed to do. Computers do not understand human intent.

Learning to think like a computer scientist helps children break down problems, think in logical sequences, and use precise language to give instructions. This is called Computational Thinking or “CT”. Computational thinking does not mean turning our brains into a computer. Rather, it means creating a solution so complete that we could use computers to run it.

This year, Computer Science Education Week is 12/7-12/11

Explore this week (even throughout this school year) and share your creations with Mr. Schnabel so we can post your work on our school website (see the instructions in the Google Slides deck
here).

What is the "Hour of Code"?

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify “code”, to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. Consisting of hour-long tutorials for students of all ages, activities cover topics such as block-based programming, web design, JavaScript, and Python.

Visit web sites below where students can start coding away! Students can then submit completed projects here to PS173Q.
